Revolutionizing Industrial Connectivity: The ROI Behind Private 5G in Manufacturing

The manufacturing industry is in the middle of a high-tech revolution, fueled by advancements in connectivity. As factories adopt more automation and move towards the concept of “smart manufacturing” for better efficiency and sustainability, the need for reliable, high-performance networks has never been greater. Private 5G networks are emerging as the ideal solution, providing the low latency, high capacity, and flexibility that manufacturers require to implement advanced technologies like automation, augmented reality (AR), and industrial IoT.

Manufacturing environments, especially large-scale facilities, demand a network that can manage thousands of connected devices with guaranteed performance. Unlike public 5G or traditional Wi-Fi, enterprises can tailor their private 5G networks to meet the needs of these industrial environments, offering control, scalability, and secure connectivity.

In this space, iBwave plays a crucial role in facilitating the deployment of private 5G networks. With its advanced network design and survey tools, iBwave supports key players in the industry to design connectivity solutions that support automation, enhance productivity, and future-proof operations in complex industrial settings.

A Massive Deployment with a Big Impact

iBwave recently highlighted an example of private 5G’s transformative power on a LinkedIn Live with Future Technologies, an end-to-end lead systems integrator specializing in private cellular networks for enterprise and government. Their discussion centered on the deployment of a private network for a Fortune 100 car manufacturer’s new electric vehicle (EV) factory.

The scale of this deployment was immense, connecting thousands of devices, including autonomous mobile robots (AMRs), all while ensuring seamless performance across a sprawling industrial landscape. It was not just about deploying a network; it was about creating an advanced ecosystem where machines, people, and processes could interact seamlessly, driving innovation and efficiency.

iBwave was a key partner, empoweringc these industry leaders with the tools and support they needed to design a robust private 5G network that would not only meet but exceed the performance expectations in such a demanding environment as a manufacturing facility.

Overcoming Challenges in Complex Industrial Environments

The deployment of private 5G in such a large and complex factory brought significant technical challenges for the team to overcome. One of the key difficulties was the high density of AMRs operating throughout the facility. Each AMR requires a reliable, low-latency connection to operate effectively, and the sheer number of robots per square foot posed a challenge for network mobility, density, and resiliency.

The industrial environment also presented physical challenges. Large metal obstructions, constantly moving machinery and other sources of signal interference fill factory floors. The robots themselves are also carrying vehicles, creating large, mobile obstacles. Designing a network that could maintain reliable coverage in such an environment requires sophisticated simulations and design tools.

This is where iBwave’s advanced software solutions came into play. Future Technologies deployed iBwave’s tools to simulate the environment, accurately predicting how signals interact with obstacles, and ensure that the network design would deliver consistent performance. By running numerous iterations of the design, the team was able to find the optimal balance of coverage, capacity, and reliability to meet the requirements of the facility.

The result was a private 5G network capable of supporting an unprecedented density of connected devices and a high level of mobility, ensuring that all AMRs could communicate without interruption.

When deploying private networks, RF planning is crucial, and iBwave has been a key partner for us, providing advanced software that enables accurate design of next-generation networks in complex environments.

Scaling Private 5G Across Industries

The success of this project has implications beyond just one factory. The deployment highlights the potential of private 5G to revolutionize industries beyond manufacturing. Other sectors, such as ports, logistics, defense, and large-scale warehousing, face similar challenges and can benefit from the advanced capabilities of private 5G networks. For example, ports require seamless connectivity to coordinate the operation of cranes, trucks, and cargo-handling equipment, while defense installations need secure and resilient networks for operations.
